Abstract
Purpose: The significance of studying the impact of university entrepreneurial support in research universities on Chinese students' entrepreneurial intentions is profound. Therefore, this study focuses on investigating this aspect. Specifically, it focuses on three dimensions: support for entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurial practice, and entrepreneurial guidance. Additionally, this study proposes a University Entrepreneurial Support Model (UESM) and attempts to use this framework to understand and analyze the various forms of support provided by universities. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs a conceptual research approach, drawing on an extensive literature review to explore how university entrepreneurial support impacts students' intentions to engage in entrepreneurship. The synthesis of existing scholarly research highlights this investigation's significance and relevance. Secondary data sources, including books, news articles, and journal publications, are utilized as evidence to substantiate the findings. Findings: The research indicates that university support for entrepreneurship, which includes education on entrepreneurship, practical experience in entrepreneurship, and guidance on entrepreneurial activities, has a positive impact on the entrepreneurial intentions of college students at various stages of their entrepreneurial journey. Research limitations/implications: This study presents a conceptual framework and theoretical insights into the support provided by universities for entrepreneurship in China. However, it does not include quantitative measurements of the impact of each dimension of support on entrepreneurial intentions. It is recommended that future research include empirical studies to validate the proposed hypotheses. Practical implications: The findings of the study indicate that universities in China go beyond providing education and also offer comprehensive support for entrepreneurship, encompassing guidance, funding, resources, and services. These various forms of support play crucial roles in shaping individuals' intentions to engage in entrepreneurial activities. Policymakers and administrators can derive valuable insights from this holistic perspective on university support for entrepreneurship to optimize their policies about fostering an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Originality/value: This study helps to deepen the understanding of entrepreneurship support in higher education by the Chinese government, universities, and other administrators, and this paper suggests that UES may have a profound impact on college students' entrepreneurial intentions in multiple ways and dimensions. The University Entrepreneurship Support Model (UESM) is proposed to lay the foundation for further research on the effects of university entrepreneurship support on college students' entrepreneurial intentions.
