Abstract
Jalan Sapi Nangoh - Beluran is the main road connecting between Western and Eastern part of Sabah which is daily and vastly used. The study area shows the presence of significant road damages and plenty of mass movements such as creeps and landslides. This study aims to examine the lithology of the rock units, namely the sedimentary rocks of the Kulapis Formation and the mélange of the Garinono Formation, to affect the engineering properties of the materials in the study area. The Kulapis Formation is characterized by the interbedded of thick sandstone and soft mudstone, siltstone or shale, while the Garinono Formation is a mixture of fragmented weathered rocks in an olistostrome clay matrix known as mélange. The result of the study shows that the unconfined strength of the soil from the Garinono Formation is lower than the the soil from the Kulapis Formation with value range between 5.85 - 8.61 kPa and 9.53 - 19.48 kPa, respectively. This is due to the clay percentage of 8.21 – 32.33% and 30.15 – 35.48% in the soil from Kulapis Formation and Garinono Formation, respectively, which classified the soils as low and intermediate plasticity. Based on XRD analysis, the soil from the Kulapis Formation shows the appearance of quartz as dominant mineral to compare with the soil from the Garinono Formation which exhibits abundance of illite and kaolinite as the major minerals. The presence of clay matrix in mélange increases water adsorption and soil plasticity which reduces the binding between particles in the soil from the Garinono Formation compared to the presence of angular quartz which increases the interlocking between particles in the soil from the Kulapis Formation.
