Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the prevalence of Problematic Pornography Consumption and Paraphilic Fantasies and to expose gender differences and relationship type differences. Methods: Quantitative data were collected from a total of 127 participants at 2 universities in Chengdu, China by using purposive sampling (N = 127; age range: 18 to 25; Mean = 21.5; Standard Deviation = 1.63). All participants completed measures of The Paraphilic Fantasy and Arousal Scale (Longpré et al., 2022) and The Problematic Pornography Consumption Scale (Bőthe et al., 2017) through Sojump/Wenjuanxing (WJX.CN). Results: This study found that problematic pornography consumption was significantly higher for both males (M = 78.4) than for females (M = 70.38), and was more pronounced in sexual partners (M = 17.95, p < .05) and other relationships (M = 20.61, p < .05). At the same time, every type of paraphilic fantasies was reported by both males and females, with males reporting more aggressive (e.g. Coercing 42.9%, Sexual Sadism 40%) and females more submissive (e.g. Masochism 44.6%), and sexual partner (M = 8.73, p < .05) and other relationships (M = 16.15, p < .05) was more pronounced. Conclusions: Problematic pornography consumption and paraphilic fantasies are common in Chinese undergraduate students, with higher levels reported for sexual partners and other relationships. This may predict the feasibility and higher significance of relationship-based intervention as a means of preventing the development of paraphilia and problematic pornography consumption.
