Abstract
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that inhabit human stomach and which has been identified as the causative agent of gastritis and can increase the risk for the development of gastric and duodenal ulcer as well as gastric cancer. There are a few types of virulence factor such as cagA/ vacA/ iceA and babA which play an important role in Helicobader pylori pathogenesis infection. In this study, the presence of iceA and babA2 had been investigated among Helicobacter pylori clinical isolates from Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kata Kinabalu, Sabah. The association of these virulence factors with patient's age and race were evaluated by PCR technique. One hundred and thirty eight biopsies sample were been collected and one hundred and twenty eight showed evidence of Helicobacter pylori. Results showed that twenty eight of isolates were positive for eitherbabA2, iceAl or iceA2. babA2 was detected in two of all clinical isolate while iceAl was six and iceA2 was twenty three respectively. From the positive iceA gene isolate, twelve were the adult age between twenty one to forty and forty one to sixty, six was the adult age above sixty. For the positive babA2 gene isolate, one isolate was the adult age twenty one to forty, one isolate of the adult age forty one to sixty and no positive isolate from adult age above sixty. There were no association reported between both iceA and babA2 genes with the age and race as both p-value were more than 0.05 (p>0.05). Both genes showed low prevalence in this study. The low prevalence of babA2 gene probably due to the allele variations. This study also showed a high iceA2 allele prevalence compare to iceAl which was different from other studies in Asia. For the association between the genotypes with the patients' age and race still need further validation.
