Abstract
The generation of a root word register is the first crucial step to making a dictionary. In the effort to avert the looming demise of the Dusunic Languages (DL), this study explores the use of a new method called Root-Oriented Word Generation (ROWG) to generate an exhaustive word list which can then be developed into a root word register for DL. The method generated DL word lists for eight written languages and three unwritten languages in DL. Root words registers for these languages were developed based on one and two-syllable constituents and DL orthography. Using an inductive and descriptive research approach, this study used existing word collection from the target languages of DL. Findings showed the generation of DL word lists and the development of root word registers for the target languages. This study was able to show that ROWG generates systematically distinct word list, called DL word lists, capturing the DL root words exhaustively in it. Thus, the DL word list, which is a one-time generation process, serves as a source for the DL speakers to collect root words of their respective language, which can reliably be quantified. It is recommended in future studies to expand the generation of root words with three or more syllables using technological tools so that the root word register is expanded and used effectively for making DL dictionaries.
