Abstract
xThis qualitative study sought to identify literacy difficulties faced by primary teachers in the course of developing reading and writing skills among primary students. The study also attempted to identify instructional strategies used by the teachers to solve reading and writing problem as intervention. The participants of this study were seventy primary teachers. The data was gathered through Case Based Method where the teachers produced written narrative about their teaching experiences. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns and themes that reflect reading and writing problems and instructional intervention strategies used in the classroom. The result indicated that the major reading problems were phonemic awareness, vocabulary and alphabet and letter sounds. Meanwhile, writing problems included cognitive process and written expression, spelling and handwriting. The approaches that were used to design the instructional activities were active and passive instruction which were drawn from Behaviourism and Constructivism. The study concluded that intervention is necessary in developing reading and writing skills for primary school and to remediate all the literacy difficulties. A study to investigate the effectiveness of intervention strategy should be addressed by future research.
