Abstract
Entrepreneurs play a significant role in the economic, social and political development. Many viewed them as central to nation development and sometimes considered as a major engine for individual economic opportunity and overall growth. Malaysia for example puts greater emphasis on entrepreneurship to develop its economic. Previous studies found that entrepreneurs are motivated by their personal characteristics (such as need for achievement, locus of control, tolerance for ambiguity, innovativeness and risktaking propensity) in their decision to initiate new venture. Do these findings applicable among Kadazandusun people? Can personal characteristics distinguish entrepreneurs from non-entrepreneurs. The answers to such questions were sought through this study in Sabah. A total of 250 set of questionnaires distributed among Kadazandusun people and only 109 were usable for analysis purpose, constituting a response rate of 43.60%. The result of the study provides strong support for need for achievement to predict the initiation of new venture. Where as the personal characteristics in term of tolerance for ambiguity, locus of control, and innovativeness are strongly supported to distinguish entrepreneurs from nonentrepreneurs. On the other hand, this study provides weaker support for risk-taking propensity either to predict the decision to initiate new venture or to distinguish entrepreneurs from nonentrepreneurs.
