Abstract

This study investigated transfer errors that featured in the English writing of bahasa Melayu mother tongue speaking pupils studying in a Chinese primary school. It aimed to find out whether bahasa Melayu and Mandarin transfer errors occurred in the English writing of the pupilsr focusing on transfer of syntax and lexis. Five bahasa Melayu mother tongue speaking pupils were identified from among year five pupils of an urban Chinese primary school The pupils were required to write four English writing of 80-100 words and 3 days of diary writing. In addition, their monthly test compositions were also collected. Error analysis was carried out on all the English writing produced by the pupils. The results revealed that both bahasa Melayu and Mandarin syntax and lexis featured in the writing of the pupils as transfer errors. It was also revealed that bahasa Melayu transfer errors featured more than Mandarin transfer errors. Hence, it was concluded that the pupils were more influenced by bahasa Melayu than by Mandarin while writing in English.
