Abstract
The removal of heavy metals (i.e. Cu and Zn) from AMD using calcareous mudstone (CMS) has been investigated by batch method. The experiments were conducted at predetermined contact time: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 24 hours for different AMD (i .e. AMD-A and AMD-B). The [mal Cu and Zn concentrations and pH were determined. A separated AMD neutralization experiment using NaOH was also carried out to evaluate the effect of pH on metal removal. The results showed that the removal of Cu and Zn was efficient but dependent on contact time, type of metal and type of AMD. Percentage metal removal increased with contact time and maximum was attained within 24 hours. The solution pH also increased from pH 3.0 to pH > 7.0. Comparatively, Cu removal was higher than Zn, while the rates in metal removal and pH increase were lower for AMD-B compared with AMD-A. The removal of Cu and Zn for the AMD was attributed to chemisorption and precipitation mechanisms. Increased in AMD pH during neutralization with NaOH, as well as during interaction with CMS, resulted in increased removal of eu and Zn via precipitation as metal hydroxides.
