Abstract
Salut Bay is one of the mangrove area in Sabah. The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of selected heavy metals Cd, Cu and Pb in sediment and seawater of Salut Bay and also to determine the factors that affect the distribution of these metals. Ten sampling stations were chosen along Salut Bay coastal area. Surface sediments sample and surface seawater sample were collected and analyzed for Cd, Cu and Pb using Atomic Adsorption Spectrophotometer. Result for this study indicated that the heavy metals concentration in sediments were 0.24ppm-0.47ppm (Cd), 0.l0ppm-1.62ppm (Cu) and 0.56ppm-2.74ppm (Pb). Whilst the concentrations for seawater samples were <0.lppm-0.1ppm (Cd), <0.lppm-0.lppm (Cu) and <0.lppm-0.3ppm (Pb). This study revealed that the heavy metals concentrations of Cd, Cu and Pb in sediment for all stations in Salut Bay are are low than the concentrations of heavy metals of clean mangrove in Hong Kong and Washington Marine Sediment Standard. While the heavy metals concentration in seawater complies with the Malaysia Interim Water Quality Standard. However, it is recommended that further studies should be carried out to monitor the seawater and sediment quality in Salut bay.
