Abstract
The sea urchin Diadema setosum is found abundantly thoughout the Indo-Pacific region. This species is important to the ecology as they act as algae controller and as home to some small animals. Sea urchin gonads have been consumed by humans since pre-historic time. The objective of the study is to determine the relationship between tidal cycle and the weight, gonad index and the egg size of the sea urchin. The observation was conducted for 2 lunar months. Ten specimens of Diadema setosum were collected from the UMS, IPMB jetty on the 1 st, 7th, 15st and the 21st day of the lunar month. The sea urchins were dissected and the weight, gonad index and the egg size of the samples were recorded and analyses were done by using SPSS. The weight of the sea urchin was found to be high on the 15th day of each lunar month and the gonad index was also found to be on the high side on the 15th day. The egg size however shows a constant pattern where it is bigger on the 1 st and 15th day of the lunar month and smaller on the 7th and the 21 st day of the lunar month. The study concludes that the sea urchin spawns on the 1 st and 15th day of the lunar month, the former resembles the new moon and the latter resembles the full moon. Spawning happened on a larger scale on the full moon as the weight, gonad index and egg size were all found to be on the high side during this period. Lunar tide is possibly one of the trigger in sea urchin spawning.
