Abstract
An experiment was conducted at the School of Sustainable Agriculture Field Laboratory in Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to investigate the effect of substituting soil with oil palm fibre and nitrogen fertilizer in transplanting medium for rice seedling growth. The objectives of the study were to determine the minimum soil quantity required in transplanting medium for normal rice seedling growth and to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on alternative medium. The experimental design was a factorial Complete Randomized Design with total of 10 treatment combinations (80 % soil + 0% oil palm fiber (control), 60 % soil+ 20 % fiber, 40 % soil + 40 % fiber, 20 % soil + 60 % fiber and 0 % soil + 80 % fiber) with and without nitrogen fertilizer application. Each treatment was replicated three times. Seedling growth data using nine parameters were collected at 25 days after sowing namely seedling height, lamina length, lamina Width, root length, leaf colour, number of leaves in main culm, dry matter of shoot and root and shoot to root ratio. Results were analysed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey. The results showed that almost all the parameters were not significantly affected by treatment and nitrogen application. Leaf colour readings were affected by treatments and nitrogen application where seedlings grown in more soil and higher nitrogen application resulted in greener colour intensity. For shoot to root ratio, the control showed Significantly higher ratio than other treatments and had no effect from nitrogen. Addition of oil palm fibre in medium had no adverse effects on seedling growth. Nitrogen application in the altered media is ineffective and unnecessary for transplanting medium and medium Without soil can be used without affecting the rice seedling growth. Hence, soilless transplanting media using oil palm fibre can be used to grow rice seedlings.
