Abstract

Population genetics is the study of the distribution and change of allele frequency under the influence of five factors; natural selection, evolutionary forces, genetic drift, mutation and migration. Y chromosome due to its lack of recombination is usually used to detect paternal lineages among human population. In this study, three Y-STR markers namely DYS19, DYS388 and DYS393 were chosen as the genetic markers to analyze Y chromosome in determining the genetic diversity of Y chromosome among Melayu Kelantan and Melayu Minang. The allele frequencies for Melayu Kelantan and Melayu Minang were estimated. For Melayu Kelantan, all three alleles has the same frequency for DYS19. Allele 128 bp in locus DYS388 has the highest frequency of 0.6000; while locus DYS393 had the highest frequency of 0.4000 in 128 bp. For Melayu Minang, highest allele frequency is seen at the allele size of 186 bp for DYS19, 131 bp for DYS388 and 132 bp for DYS393. Y chromosome at all three loci showed polymorphic pattern indicating variation in all the loci. Although both groups are considered Malays, the genetic distance obtained was considerably high.
