Abstract

The objectives of this study were to screen the phytochernicals and biological activities of 100% (v/v) methanol and acetone extracts of selected medicinal plant species. The existence of alkaloid was screened using Mayer and Wagner test while the existence of flavonoid was determined by using Beta Smith and Metcalf, Wilstatter Sianidin and Leukoanthosianin test. Determination of saponin was done using Foam and Liebermann-Burchadd (LB) test. The biological activity tests on anti bacterial, anti fungi and MKK1, were screened. Results shown that alkaloid was found in Elephantopus tomentus, Sida rhombilolia, Paederia scandens, Manihot esculenta, Dillenia suffruticosa, Pandanus odorus, Alocasia macro"hiza, Wedelia chinensis and Leucaena leucocephala. Flavonoid test showed that Dillenia suffruticosa contains flavonol, kalkon and auron, Paederia scandens extract contains flavonon, Leucaena leucocephala contains flavon and 3 samples contains leukoanthosianin. Foam test, indicated that Dendrobium cinereum, Dillenia suffruticosa, Alocasia macro"hiza, and 'rosok' bark (Sample A and B) showed positive results. There were 7 plant species contain free acids. In LB test, Dillenia suffruticosa contain saponin triterpenoid while Paederia scandens contain saponin steroid. For antibacterial test, Bacillus subtilis, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Eschericia coli are not inhibited by the entire 13 methanol and acetone plant extracts. However, methanol extract of Dillenia suffruticosa and Alocasia macrorrhiza showed inhibition against Salmonella typhi. The diameter of the inhibition zones range from 0.8 to 2.8 cm diameter. The screening against Staphylococcus aureus showed positive results in methanol and acetone extract of Elephantopus tomentus, Dillenia suffruticosa, and Wedelia chinensis. Sample A and B (methanol extract) also gave positive results. The sizes of the inhibition zones range from 0.7-1.7cm diameter. In antifungal test, all the sample extracts gave negative results. For MKKl inhibitor screening, all the acetone sample extracts showed negative results. However there were 5 methanols sample extracts (Paederia scandens, Manihot esculenta, Drymoglossum piloselloides, Dillenia suffruticosa and Alocasia macrorrhiza) showed positive results where the growths around the paper disc range from 0.7-2.0cm diameter.
