Abstract

Dynamic Integrated Vulnerability Assessment (DIVA) software is an integrated module coastal assessment that analyzes the impacts of sea level rise to coastal area, by considering the scenarios of mitigations, adaptations, and socioeconomy. The global database provided in the DIVA software, such as country data, administrative data, tidal basin data, river data, and coastline segment data, has enabled this study to analyze and predict the changes of coastal wetland in the time range of 30 years from the year 2000, without insertion of secondary data. The aims of this study were to compare the projected changes of coastal wetland areas in Sabah with and without coastal adaptation using DIVA software. Two cases were created with fixed climate socioeconomic scenario of SRES AlB and medium sea level rise, but different in the adaptation with one served with full adaptation and one stay naturally without adaptation. The DIVA projected results were used as core data and tested with Mann-Whitney Test, for the significant difference on the projected changes of coastal wetland with adapted case and non-adapted case. Moreover, the advantages and limitations of the application of DIVA software have been identified in this study as well. The coastal wetland areas with implementation of full adaptive strategies were projected as more sustainable, protective and resistant to the sea level rise compared with the coastal wetlands of non-adaptation. The DIVA projections for full-adapted case were Sabah will remain 7036 km² wetlands on the year 2010, decreases to 7002 km² on the year 2020 and 6975 km² on the year 2030. While, the DIVA projections for the case without adaptation shows the potential wetland changes to sea level rise were Sabah is projected to have 6939 km² wetland on the year 2010, 6776 km² wetland on the year 2020 and 6619 km² wetland on the year 2030. The DIVA software was more usefulness in the coastal policy analysis and the parameters provided in DIVA software is too coarse for analysis and find solution on coastal management. However, DIVA has provided a basic picture for determination of priority research on further or future coastal research.
