Abstract
A side chain liquid crystalline polymer is synthesized with 4-nitrophenylamine as a starting material. The initial step was to synthesis compound 1, which was 4-(4-nitrophenylazo)-phenol through the coupling reaction of diazonium salt. Compound 1 contained azo group that joins two aromatic ring and therefore compound 1 functioned as rigid mesogenic core of the polymer, an important factor that determines the cystallinity. The liquid crystal polymer synthesized in this research used the azo containing group as the mesogenic unit. 4-(4-nitrophenylazo )-phenol used to prepare compound 2 through alkylation with 3 -bromopropene. 3-bromopropene was the spacer unit for the polymer. Radical polymerization of compound 2 with the presence of AIBN as an initiator in tetrahydrofuran produced the polymer. IR Spectroscopy of compound 1, compound 2 of the polymer showed the presence of the functional groups that was determined via interpretation of the wavelength. The phase transition temperature, the melting point and crystallization point was investigated by thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
