Abstract

A total of 900 samples of hermit crabs were collected and analysed by identifying the species, sex, shell type utilized and measuring of carapace length and weight of the hermit crabs as well as aperture length and weight of shells utilized. A total of five species of hermit crabs in UMS; Diogenes tumidus, D. klaasi, Diogenes pallescens, Clibanarius merguiensis, C. striolatus and two species of hermit crabs in Sulaman; a Diogenes sp. and D. foresti were identified. D. tumidus were found more abundant in middle tide mark, C. merguiensis and C. striolatus were found more abundant towards the low tide mark while D. klaasi were found abundant near high tide mark. In Sulaman, D. foresti is the dominant species and its abundant decreased towards the water's edge. Generally, the hermit crab population in UMS is female-bias while in Sulaman it is male-bias. The size of hermit crabs in term of carapace length and weight were found to be different between species along transects and that hermit crabs in UMS are relatively larger than hermit crabs in Sulaman. A total of 30 species and two species of shell types were utilized by hermit crabs in UMS and Sulaman respectively and the most common type of shell utilized is C. batillari. SPSS correlation test showed that there is strong positive linear correlation between hermit crab carapace length and its shell aperture length and between hermit crab weight and its shell weight.
