Abstract

Quality drinking water should be free from harmful levels of metals. This study was carried out to determine the concentrations of selected metals (iron, lead and manganese) in tap water from five locations of Kota Kinabalu. Samples were collected In polyethylene bottles after run for five minutes. It was filtered, acidified with 3 mL (1+1) nitric acid and kept at 4°C. About 0.4 mL (1+1) nitric acid was added to samples prior analysis with flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The total mean concentrations of iron, lead and manganese in tap water samples from five locations of Kota Kinabalu were 0.230±0.085 ppm, 0.022±0.010 ppm and 0.026±0.005 ppm respectively. The concentrations of iron and manganese were below the maximum limit but the concentration of lead was above the maximum limit. Results indicated that low concentration of manganese was found in all tap water samples from five locations of Kota Kinabalu. Low concentration of iron was found in most tap water samples except Tanjung Aru in which their mean concentration was 0.333±0.081 ppm, therefore exceeded maximum limit. High levels of iron and lead in tap water may give toxicity and pose adverse health effects to the populations. More studies seem to be necessary to be conducted to confirm this result and finding the reason for these contaminations.
