Abstract
In this observational study, possible effects of the Ramadan fast on the dietary pattern and nutritional intake amongst 35 female university students were observed. Mean energy intake amongst fasting subjects was low during Ramadan compared to the week before due to the insignificant decrease of carbohydrate, fat and protein intakes. The decrease in energy intake might also be due to fewer intakes of all the food groups. The intake of fiber, calcium and iron amongst both fast and non-fast observers may be of great concern as their intake does not meet the recommended intakes. Results indicate that the Ramadan fast does not effect the reduction in weight. The amount of water intake for both fast and non-fast observers were in the recommended range, however it is not sufficient to explain the occurrence of hypohydration amongst fasting subjects. The decrease in weight, macronutrient, micronutrient intake and the number of servings according to the food groups does not necessarily due to fasting. Future studies, should observe the biochemical changes amongst fast observers to further understand the metabolic changes of the body during the fasting period.
