Abstract

This research was conducted in SMK St. Joseph, Papar. It involved 60 students from two classes of Form Two students. It was carried out by observing science lessons taught using different strategies and activities combined between the science instruction and the second language strategies. This research was conducted to expose the students with various strategies and activities in the teaching of teaching science in English. Three strategies were selected randomly namely the textbook instruction, inquiry instruction (science laboratory) and multimedialcourseware instruction. There were various activities used in the teaching of second language combined with activities used in the teaching of Science during these lessons. A descriptive type of research called the survey research has been used in conducting this research. Questionnaires were used to discover the students' attitude towards the language and the strategies used. Besides questionnaires, the researcher's report and the teacher's reflection are also used as the research instrument. The outcome of the research is very important to provide ideas and alternatives for the Science teachers to handle the challenges in the teaching of science using English. The f8search also studied the students' preferences or interest in relation to the strategies used. The second language strategies used in the science lessons were adapted from the Communicative Language Teaching approach. It was discovered that the students' preferences fell highly on the activities used in the teaching of second language. These activities have made them more motivated to leam the lesson and the use of English in the teaching of Science was not a hindrance for the students to /earn the subject. The samples of the lessons carried out during the research were presented in the Teaching Outline. A descriptive analysis and Statistical Packages for Social Sciences Version 12.00 were used to analyze the data gathered from this research. Based on the findings of the research, further recommendations on how to deal with other levels of abilities were presented in the last chapter.
