Abstract

The purpose of this study is to study whether the personal characteristics have the effect on firm performance with mediation of entrepreneurial orientation in Kota Kinabalu Sabah. The study has examining the relationship between the personal characteristics and entrepreneurial orientation; personal characteristics and firm performance; entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance; as well as the mediating effect between independent variables and dependent variable. The study has conceptualized the personal characteristics as multidimensional construct which consist of four dimensions of attributes (i.e. need for achievement, internal locus of control, risk taking and self-efficacy). About 185 respondents were participated in the study which are the contractors who own the construction firm operating around Kata Kinabalu Sabah. The respondents selected were limited to Bumiputera Contractors and the nature of business in Mechanical and Electrical, and Civil. Convenient sampling method were employed and using snowballing technique for data collection. In this study, Smart PLS (Partial Least Square) Version 2.0 was used to examine the measurement and structural model. The findings from the study suggested that there is positive influence of need for achievement and risk taking towards firm performance; positive influence of need for achievement and self-efficacy towards entrepreneurial orientation; and no mediation effect of entrepreneurial orientations between all personal characteristics variables and firm performance. The findings of the study suggest that contractors' personal characteristics of need for achievement and risk taking is important in order to improve the firm performance. For future research, recommended to include more personal characteristics variables and environment effect in the study to understand better on other factor that influence the firm performance.
