Abstract
The objective of this study is to examine the perception of the employees on the effect of the economic downturn of which employees might have the intention to withdraw from the present job. The sample for this study comprise of the employees of the public and the private sectors in Kata Kinabalu, Sabah. A sample of 280 employees had been targeted, however only 210 questionnaires managed to be collected and 203 usable (completed questionnaires) were analysed. For the purpose of this study, the researcher used questionnaires as the main research instrument. This research is based on ten hypotheses. The result of this research revealed that job withdrawal intention among the public and private sectors increases when job insecurity, role conflict and alternative employment opportunities are high and low job satisfaction among the employees .. The results show that 40.8 percent of the variance explains the job withdrawal intention of employees in the public and private sectors to withdraw from their jobs. Nevertheless, job withdrawal intention was not moderated by demographic, empowerment, and rewards and recognition variables. It is hoped that this research will benefit the human resource management practices in both public and private sectors in terms of motivating, empowering, and supportive towards their employees.
