Abstract
This study focuses on a specific teaching and learning strategy called cooperative learning in the ESL classroom. It aims to find out the effectiveness of cooperative learning methods on learners learning English as second language. As cooperative learning is a wide area of study, the researcher has limited this study into finding out the effectiveness of cooperative learning in the teaching of short stories in the current English literature component in Malaysian secondary schoo·ls. The samples for this study are 60 Form 4 students in SMK Kuhara, an urban school in Tawau. The samples were divided into control group (32 learners) and treatment group (28 learners) for a duration of 10 weeks and were taught using different methodologies in the literature classes. The control group was taught using traditional methods while the treatment group was taught using cooperative learning strategies. Being a quantitative research in nature, the pre and post tests were the main instruments used to collect data needed in the attempt of determining the effectiveness of cooperative learning method. however the questionnaire and teacher's observation checklist provided more data required to support and reinforce the findings of this research. At the end of the study, it revealed that learners who were exposed to cooperative learning methods showed significant improvement in their ability to comprehend and process information in the short stories learnt especially when given sufficient time. Their post tests results showed significant improvement after using cooperative learning strategies in the literature classroom compared to those exposed to traditional methods. Most importantly, the learners in the treatment group expressed their preference to cooperative learning methods as it allowed room for interaction. exchange of ideas. clarification and problem solving. This study also gives some insight to teachers on the processes and activities needed when cooperative learning is carried out in the literature classroom.
