Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate the nutrients,pro-vitamine (j3-carotene),vitamins (thiamin, ascorbic add and a-tocopherol), minerals (Ca, Na, K, Mg, Fe, Cu,Mg, Se, Zn, Cr and Ge), antioxidant activity and total phenolics. Both mangroves species showed potential source of total dietary fiber especially Rhizophora mucronata which is comparable to carrot, radish and cabbage. The β-carotene was found high in R. mucronata (61.29 mg/100g DW) while ascorbic acid was found high in Rhizophora apiculata (142.38 mg/l00g DW). R. apiculata and R. mucronata are rich in minerals with the range of 0.42 - 12013.68 mg/100g DW and 0.07 - 10133.11 mg/100g DW, respectively. The antioxidant extraction yield for both mangroves species decrease in the following order: Water> Methanol> Ethanol> Acetone> Ethyl acetate> Hexane. The methanolic extracts of both mangroves species demonstrated high antioxidant activity in DPPH, ABTS, FRAP assays and total phenolic content while hexane and ethyl acetate extracts were found high in l3-carotene bleaching inhibition. The antioxidative activity of both mangroves species evaluated in ABTS and FRAP assays have strong significant correlations (r = 0.94 - 0.98] with its total phenolic content. In conclusion, both mangroves species leaves can be a vital source of nutrients and antioxidant phytochemicals. This study thus provides a scientific fundamental data for future study of mangrove leaves as a source of food, micronutrient, antioxidant and also exploration for scientific medicinal usage.
