Abstract

This study investigates intercultural communication dynamics among learners in a rural ESL (English as a Second Language) classroom in Sabah and Japan. The research focuses on how cultural differences and linguistic challenges affect interaction and learning experiences in this unique educational setting. Through qualitative methods, including classroom observations and interviews, the study examines how learners from diverse cultural backgrounds navigate communication barriers, adapt to differing educational practices, and foster intercultural understanding. Findings reveal that while learners face significant challenges due to language barriers and cultural discrepancies, they also develop effective strategies for bridging these gaps. The study highlights the role of cultural sensitivity, adaptive teaching methods, and peer support in enhancing communication and learning outcomes in such intercultural environments. The results offer insights into improving ESL instruction and intercultural communication strategies in similar rural settings.
