Abstract
This study is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the integration of the 5E Teaching Model in the Year Four Science STEM Inquiry-Based Teaching Module in Sabah rural primary schools. The objective of this study is to identify the key features of the Science STEM Inquiry-Based Teaching Module required by rural primary school teachers, develop a module based on the 5E Teaching Model and review the effectiveness of the module in improving the achievement and attitude towards science. A total number of 226 people were involved in the pilot study and 33 primary school students were involved in the actual study. Instrument validity and reliability were made through Rasch Measurement Model for test items through inspections on item reliability, item separation, polarity, fit and uniformity of the item as well as PLSSEM for questionnaire items through the examination on Cronbach’s alpha, convergent validity and discriminant validity. The DDR module approach based on the ADDIE Model involves three phases namely needs analysis, design and development as well as evaluation. Three sub-topics were tested in the module; Scientific Skills, Human Respiratory Process and Properties of Materials. The review of the effectiveness of the module was determined through a One-Way of Repeated Measures. Tests were performed in four-time intervals; pre-test, post 1, post 2 and post 3. Significant differences were found in the mean scores on Sphericity Assumed, Greenhouse-Geisser or Huyn Feldt. Science Achievement Tests were conducted based on the sub-topics of Scientific Skills, Human Respiratory Processes and Material Properties. Significant differences were identified in the mean score construct of attitude towards science for all six constructs. The implication of this research is that the suitability the accessibility of resources are important in determining the effectiveness of teaching and learning in rural areas. Therefore, the research in identifying the comprehensive teaching resources in rural areas should be continued in order to ensure the achievement and positive attitude of students towards STEM.
