Abstract

Literature has been a subject of study in many countries at a secondary or tertiary level, but until recently has not been given much emphasis in the EFL/ESL classroom. It has only been since the 1980s that this area has attracted more interest among the teachers. Literature with its emotive depth and exquisitely crafted language was a powerful vehicle to learn English. The challenge for ESL teachers in today's classrooms seems to be how to make literature alive and relevant to our students. The purpose of this study is to look at one of the way in which literature especially for writing purpose can be exploited in the classroom. In a single decade, we have seen many innovative ideas for the use of e-mail in the ESL classroom. Because there are so many, it is often difficult to keep track of what these innovations are and how they might benefit the language learner. In Malaysia situation, there was the same consideration to make the shift towards a more technological literate by using the tools available in the ICT Age. This study aims to provide an overview of the various uses for e-mail in ESL literature learning and the advantages that have been referred to in the literature about the use of e-mail in language learning contexts. Following the explanation of the possible benefits to ESL learners, I provide an overview of the effectiveness of 'Emailing' Technique on Improving the Learners' English Literature writing.
